A nonsectarian, coed preschool through 6th grade school with a progressive tradition founded in 1929.
Rose Valley, PA on a wooded 9.5-acre campus one mile from downtown Media, PA. and fifteen miles from center city Philadelphia.
The School in Rose Valley is a progressive school for children in preschool through sixth grade. In our classrooms and our wooded campus, teachers and students create experiences that arouse curiosity, stretch muscles, strengthen initiative, and stimulate questions. We guide children to know themselves, to delight in learning, and to understand their opportunities and responsibilities in our community and the world.
Approximately 135 boys and girls from a 20-mile radius. Children who attend the school come from many school districts including: Rose-Tree Media, Wallingford-Swarthmore, Radnor, Great Valley, Upper Darby, Lower Merion, Haverford, Chester-Upland, Ridley, Philadelphia, Tredyffrin-Easttown and West Chester.
Teacher-student ratio is approximately 1:8. Optimal class size is 16 with one teacher. Because we have specialist teachers in Music, Art, Sports, Science, Woodshop and Spanish, students often go to their specials subjects classes in half groups or thirds. For example, in 5-day preschool, 6 or 7 students go to Woodshop with the Woodshop teacher and a preschool teacher, while the other 6 or 7 remain in the classroom for a small group project with another preschool teacher. In Kindergarten, 7 students may attend a literacy lesson with one lead Kindergarten teacher, 7 may make play dough with another lead Kindergarten teacher, and 7 may attend Music.
School hours are 8:15 to 3:00. Preschool half-day children leave at 11:45. Children may arrive in classrooms at 8:15 and must be picked up at 3:00. Children taking buses home will be dismissed from their classrooms at 3:00. (Teachers are always here before and after those times, working in classrooms, preparing lessons, arranging provisions and displays, conferring with one another).
In most local school districts for most elementary grades there is public busing beginning in kindergarten. Our school office manager can help you to arrange for busing to SRV.
The School in Rose Valley community is aware of how much good health and proper nutrition can contribute to a child’s well-being and ability to learn. Therefore, we are committed to serving nutritionally balanced meals. We strive to use a limited amount of processed foods, especially those containing white flour, salt and sugar. We buy locally and use organic products whenever possible.
The meals prepared are well balanced Type A School Lunches, which are usually 3/5 vegetarian and 2/5 fish or meat weekly. A vegetarian alternative is available on fish or meat days. We cook from scratch as much as possible, and provide fresh vegetables and milk daily.
Snacks are provided by the school and typically include things like raisins, sesame sticks, cut and whole fruit, and sometimes pretzels and whole grain crackers. Our intention is to provide menus with optimum appeal, variety and nourishment.
Pre-Day & Afternoon Child Care
Pre-Day – Pre-Day is available for before-school care from 7:30 to 8:15am. It is held in the Library or the playground (in good weather). There is no charge for Pre-Day for children who have no option of riding a school bus (too young or no service by the district), or for children whose buses arrive at SRV before 8:15.
Afternoons – Our Afternoons program is available for after-school care from 3 to 6pm. Children who attend start off with a healthy snack in our Afternoons room, which is equipped with games, books, puzzles, arts and crafts materials, and computers.
At SRV we offer families safe and reliable on-campus programs when school is not in session. During winter, spring and summer vacations we offer Mini Camps and SRV Summer Camp, which are open to all area children. During Parent-Teacher Conference Days and Staff Development Days we offer coverage for SRV students and their siblings (3-12).
In addition to the classroom curriculum the school has specialized teachers for Art, Music, Science, Woodshop, Spanish and Sports.
Tuition Assistance is available based on need for full-time students from preschool through sixth grade.
